Sneaky Ways to Get More Fiber

Sneaky Ways to Get More Fiber

Fiber could be considered an almost magical ingredient for those wishing to whittle down their waistlines. Fiber is known for slowing the digestive process making you feel fuller for longer periods of time. It also stabilizes blood sugar and delays insulin response. Another advantage to increasing your fiber intake is better digestive health through regular bowel movements.

As far as weight loss goes, nutritionists will tell you that one gram of fiber literally cancels out about seven calories. That means that if you made it a goal to consume 35 grams of fiber a day, you would theoretically lose roughly half a pound a week. Who knew that you could lose weight by eating more? But if you have ever tried fiber supplements that you mix in water, you have no doubt seen the difficulty in consuming this amount of fiber. Fortunately, there are many ways to sneak good-tasting fiber into your diet.

Beans

Along with a lot of other beneficial nutrients, beans are full of fiber. In fact, most beans contain an average of about 10 grams of fiber per ½ cup serving. Of course, you could simply serve them more often as a side dish, but there are many other ways to incorporate more servings of beans into healthy diet. Here are a few tricks for eating more beans:

• Make a fresh veggie salsa with beans, corn, diced onion, and tomatoes and serve over fiber-rich salad greens.

• Puree cooked beans and seasoning in a food processor to make a wonderful dip for raw veggies.

• Thin out that same dip with a little milk and add a tablespoon or two of dry ranch seasoning and you have a salad dressing or a sauce for steamed vegetables.

• Use bean flour. Tired of eating beans? Try cooking with bean flour. Bean flour is made from grinding dried beans and is readily available on the specialty aisle in many larger grocery stores. Bean flour is made from a variety of beans ranging from white beans to black beans – even green peas. Though bean flour is a bit dense and is not an adequate substitute for every recipe, most of the time you can replace some of the wheat flour with bean flour. Bean flour can also be used for breading chicken, making gravy, or thickening soup. It has twice the fiber of whole wheat flour and it is gluten-free.

Vegetables

Everybody knows that vegetables are very high in fiber content, but what if you are not particularly fond of them? Try these sneaky tricks for adding fiber-rich veggies to your diet:

• Yellow squash, zucchini, and cauliflower can be steamed, pureed, and added to spaghetti sauce without detection.

• Open a can of pumpkin and add it to homemade beef stew or chili. You won’t even know it’s there.

• Dice up mushrooms in your ground beef, turkey, or pork. The meaty consistency of mushrooms makes it a perfect pairing with ground meat.

• Put a handful of spinach in a blueberry smoothie. The taste of spinach is so mild that you won’t be able to taste it and the deep color of the blueberries will keep your smoothie blue instead of green.

Oats

Incorporating oats into your diet is a great way to add whole-grain fiber. If you don’t like oatmeal, try these tips:

• Add oats to meatloaf or meatballs as a binding ingredient instead of bread crumbs.

• Make oatmeal cookies. Up the fiber ante by adding raisins and nuts.

• Soak a handful of plain, instant oats in milk and use in your morning cereal. The oats will soften and won’t notice any difference in taste.

• Grind oats in a blender and use the oat flour to coat oven-fried fish or chicken.

Increasing your fiber intake not only helps you with the battle of the bulge, but it can also decrease your risk for heart disease, type II diabetes, and colorectal cancer. Use these sneaky tips for getting more fiber into your diet.

Raw food diet, Beauty and weight loss – an inevitable connection

Raw food dietWhat does a raw food diet mean? How do you combine it with raw food recipes and how does this help? Is to survive on raw food and becoming vegan same thing or just similar in nature? Too many questions, I am trying to find some answers to this imploring questions. Raw food essentially means uncooked food. The logic or assumption that goes with it is if you heat a food item over above 118 degrees Fahrenheit, then it would lose all its natural nutritional qualities and would not give any benefit when consumed. Hence, frying, baking, sautéing, etc. are of no good.

What kind of food do you have in raw food diet? Well consuming raw food does not mean you have to go vegan. You can enjoy the non-vegan food such as meat and fish. It simply needs to be uncooked. Hence, along with veggies, go for the nuts, and fruits, all kinds of dairy products. Yet do not leave out the wonderful sushi and sashimi from your everyday raw food diet. You can also soak, sprout, pickle, blend in soups and indirectly steam to make the food a lot better. These can also be stored though not for long however avoid all kind of preservatives.

Why take raw food diet? There can be numerous reasons for a person to go on raw food diet or enjoy raw food recipes. First of the many reasons would be weight loss. Many people go on a weight loss program and opt for this diet. It certainly allows one to lose around 2 pound of weight per week if someone practically stays on this diet. The consideration that should well thought about is that it should be a well balanced one even when it is uncooked.

Second reason would be beauty. The raw food diet is rich not only in vitamins, antioxidants and minerals but rich in all the natural properties and qualities. These help the skin get better effects and cleanse it further. The water content in the uncooked food is high which also leaves the skin hydrated from inside giving a smooth and supple texture. If someone is looking for method to get a glowing skin, then raw food diet is the answer. Apart from this, the third reason would be that consuming raw food aids the digestive process as the enzymes get more effective action. Fourth, it also helps to boost the immune system.

Hence, enjoy the raw food diet or raw food recipes in a balanced proportion and be prized with enhanced beauty, glowing and hydrated skin, more energy to work with and certainly a wonderful figure after the weight loss.

How to Get Over a Bad Night’s Sleep

I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately so I really appreciate today’s guest post by Carlo Pandian. Even if you normally sleep well, you might like to read this post for future reference or send it on over to someone you know who’s experiencing sleep issues.

There is nothing worse than waking up with an alarm shrieking in your ear, absolutely certain that you only fell asleep twenty minutes previously. Equally bad is watching the clock tick slowly through the small hours, as you lie awake in bed, tossing and turning and unable to fall asleep. You drag yourself to work, but by the time midday rolls around your eyelids feel like they need propping open with matchsticks and you can hardly stand up straight you are so tired.

So what can you do to get through the day without falling apart?

Sleepy - Year 2 - 136/365Enjoy a Power Nap

When we have had a bad night’s sleep, the best solution is to try and make up the shortfall and have a nap. Obviously if you are at work, this is not such a great idea – your boss is unlikely to be very amused if he walks in and finds you fast asleep on the floor.

However, if you can take some time out, or if you have a private office, try resting your head on the desk and taking a power nap for fifteen minutes. A short power nap will rejuvenate you and help keep you going until bedtime.

Be careful not to sleep for any longer than thirty minutes – too much sleep and you end up in ‘deep sleep’, which will leave you groggy and disoriented.

Take Some Exercise

It may sound counter intuitive when all you want to do is fall asleep, but sometimes exercise can help to revive the mind and body. A short session at the gym before work might kick start your day and blow away the cobwebs, or if you are struggling after a heavy morning, go out for a short power walk or run at lunchtime to clear your head.

Go Out for Some Fresh Air

Staying indoors in a warm room when you are tired is fatal. You are pretty much guaranteed to fall asleep and even more so if the room is poorly lit. It can be disastrous if you need to sit in a meeting for a couple hours when you have had a poor night’s sleep, so if you don’t have time to slip out for a brisk walk in the fresh air, open the windows and let the fresh air come to you.

Try a Caffeine Kick

When you are so tired you can’t think straight, a strong dose of coffee might be enough to energize you for a few hours. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant and if you drink enough of it, it will soon wake you up. Of course coffee isn’t the only drink that contains caffeine, so if you hate coffee, try coke or an energy drink with extra caffeine. Just be careful not to overdose on the stuff or you will be climbing the walls by bedtime.

Make sure you get a Good Night’s Sleep at the End of the Day

One disturbed night is not going to harm you and as long as you make sure you catch up on your sleep-debt over the course of the next few days, you will be back to normal in no time. However, if a lack of sleep becomes a regular thing, sleep deprivation can build up and cause all manner of problems.

Obviously if your lack of sleep is caused by having a new baby in the house, there is very little you can do other than try and take naps wherever possible, but if you are experiencing sleep problems regularly with no apparent cause, then book yourself in for a health assessment as soon as possible to rule out the possibility of any underlying health problems.
